DIRECTOR OF FAITH FORMATION
Ashley Adams has been active and involved with Christian education, faith formation, and children’s & youth ministries for what seems like her entire life. Ashley grew up in Simsbury, CT, going to the First Church of Christ in Simsbury, where every Sunday you would find her in Sunday School. As she grew older, you would always find Ashley in her church’s youth room on Sunday evenings.
As her life has progressed in years since, it has become clear to Ashley that God has always been calling her to ministry, ever since she was little, and that she’s always felt at home in a church. Ashley feels that her focus has always been with the youth because she noticed that young people are being pushed aside in everyday society. She believes that Church can be a special place for kids by providing a nurturing and loving environment that may not be found anywhere else. And with her strong foundation in the United Church of Christ and some 15 years of experience working with children and youth, Ashley has certainly gotten involved in many ways. She’s been a Sunday School teacher, a youth group leader, a camp counselor, she’s run Bible studies, organized outreach projects, helped plan and lead Confirmation, planned fundraisers and designed advertising media, organized and supervised mission trips, developed a scholarship program, helped start a community Earth Day event, and even stepped-in to lead Sunday worship services when the Minister was sick.
Ashley is presently working full-time as Director of Student Ministries for a church in Bethel. In her more than seven years at that church, her position has continued to grow and has changed substantially. Ashley started there as Youth Director and would oversee the youth group. She then took-on the role of Sunday School Superintendent, which moved her into CE administration and helped her progress in leadership from elementary to high school students. In her present capacity, she’s handled pretty-much all the same duties as our CE Director position. Her job scope has also grown to include adults as well, typically not
in a formal setting, but through counseling during difficult family situations.
Ashley attended Gordon College in Wenham, MA, concentrating on Youth Ministries and Biblical Studies, and has also completed courses in Childhood Development and Public Speaking at Gateway Community College in New Haven; she remains interested in continuing to pursue her college degree. Ashley presently lives conveniently nearby, in Woodbridge, with her husband Sterling, their eleven- month-old son Kip, and their dog Mack. Beyond juggling work and being a new mom, in her spare time, Ashley enjoys playing softball and spending time outdoors.
Remarkably, but not unlike so many things at our church that, with God’s help, just seem to somehow work out, Ashley’s “fit” into our plans for the future seems just-about perfect. As our folks investigated and asked others about her, Ashley has received only glowing reviews and recommendations without reservation.
It seems that Ashley’s energy and excited enthusiasm for the position is matched only by opinions expressed in our Search Committee’s highest recommendation.
